What is Hair Transplant?

Hair transplant addresses hair loss by relocating hair-bearing skin from one part of the scalp and grafting it onto areas with thinning or bald hair, or those affected by trauma. This intricate process, performed under the expertise of a qualified surgeon, begins with the precise extraction of healthy hair follicles, ensuring their viability for transplantation. These follicles are strategically placed into the recipient sites, where hair growth is desired. The surgeon takes into account the natural hairline and the direction of hair growth, aiming to achieve a result that not only restores hair but also provides a seamless and natural appearance.

During Hair Transplant

Hair transplant is usually carried out using local anaesthesia to reduce discomfort and ensure your comfort during the procedure. Our surgeon delicately extracts hair follicles from the donor area, typically the back of your head, and then implants them into the recipient site. The duration of the procedure varies, typically taking several hours, depending on the treatment’s scope and location.

Post-Care Hair Transplant

Here are the following post-care instruction suggested by our surgeons:

  • Refrain from consuming alcohol, ibuprofen (Advil/Motrin), aspirin, vitamins, and herbs for 48 hours post-hair transplant to prevent blood thinning and excess bleeding. Prescription-strength medication will be provided.
  • In case of minor bleeding from the transplant or donor area, gently apply firm pressure with a dampened gauze pad for 5-10 minutes, avoiding rubbing.
  • A pressure dressing will be applied to the donor site for 2 days.
  • To prevent itching, maintain graft moisture by spraying the recipient area with plain saline solution and coconut oil 3-4 times daily. Shedding of hair from grafts is normal.
  • If the procedure includes frontal hairline restoration, lay as flat as possible for 2 days to minimise swelling. Swelling is a natural post-hair transplant process.
  • For crown work, sleep elevated with a neck pillow for proper positioning.
  • To reduce swelling around the eyes or forehead, apply an ice pack or frozen peas over the eyebrows for 15 minutes each hour (not on grafts) during the first 72 hours.
  • Scabs will form over the transplant sites and fall off naturally within 2 weeks; do not pick or scratch them.
  • Do not wash the grafted area for 48 hours. Afterward, use a gentle rinse with lukewarm water and Johnson & Johnson Baby Shampoo, avoiding direct shower pressure.
  • When combing wet hair, use an “up and over” motion to avoid scalp and graft scratching; do not use a brush.
  • Avoid hair products containing oil or alcohol for the first 14 days.
  • Limit strenuous activities, weight lifting, and intense workouts for 7 days; most workplace activities can be resumed within a day or two.
  • Avoid wearing hats for the first 2 days, then wear loose-fitting ball caps in the sun for over 30 minutes. Apply sunscreen after 2 weeks.
  • Do not use hydrogen peroxide or other ointments unless instructed by the physician, as they may affect healing.

Hair Transplant Recovery

Our hair transplant yields natural-looking outcomes with minimal scarring and recovery time. Newly transplanted hair typically begins growing within a few weeks, with noticeable hair growth improvement occurring over several months.

Maintaining realistic expectations about hair transplant results is crucial. While the procedure can provide long-lasting, natural-looking results for most patients, those with underlying health conditions may require additional treatments in the future. Poor hair transplant techniques can also necessitate further treatment, so choosing a professional hair transplant clinic is essential. Discuss your expectations and goals with our surgeon beforehand to ensure a clear understanding of expected results.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

QUESTIONS

Is hair transplant permanent?

Yes, hair transplant is considered to be a permanent solution to hair loss. Your newly transplanted hair should continue to grow naturally for the rest of your life.

How long does it take for the transplanted hair to grow?

The newly transplanted hair will begin to grow within several weeks after the procedure. You will see a noticeable improvement in hair growth within several months, with the final results becoming apparent after 9-12 months.

Is there visible scarring left behind?

Patients commonly worry about scarring after hair transplant, aiming to keep it inconspicuous during various situations. Our skilled plastic surgeon employs advanced techniques, using microscopic tools to extract hair follicles with minimal impact. These tiny extraction sites result in nearly invisible scars, especially in the lighter scalp areas between follicles. This approach allows for short haircuts or even complete head shaving without noticeable scarring, a significant improvement over older strip removal methods with more visible scars.
