What is the penis?

The penis is one of the external structures of the male reproductive system. Its function is to transfer semen during sexual activity and to provide an opening for urine to be expelled. It is made of three parts:

The root is the base of the penis that attaches to the pelvic bone.

The shaft is the main part of the penis that consists of three internal chambers made up of special tissue. These chambers fill with blood when a man is sexually aroused which causes the penis to become rigid and erect.

The glans penis is the helmet-shaped head of the penis on which the opening of the urethra is located.

Penile disorders can affect any part of the penis, both internally and externally. These conditions can impact a man’s physical, sexual, and mental health.

Conditions that can affect the penis

There are many conditions that can affect the penis. Contrary to popular belief, these conditions though more common in elderly men can affect men of all ages. The penile disorders which we treat at the Bizrahmed clinic include:

Urethral Stricture: A condition in which the urethra, the tube that carries urine out of the body, becomes narrowed or blocked due to scarring or inflammation. The narrowed area, or stricture, can make it difficult or painful to urinate, and can also lead to other complications such as urinary tract infections and kidney damage.

Congenital penile curvature: One abnormality that can be present at birth is penile curvature, which causes the penis to be bent or curved in any direction. The severity of congenital penile curvature can vary, and the condition can lead to a range of symptoms including painful erections, painful urination, and pain during sexual intercourse.

Penis pain: A number of conditions can cause penis pain, such as infections, cancer, and structural abnormalities. Penis pain can seriously affect a man’s physical, sexual, and mental health if not identified and treated accordingly.

Aesthetics: Our specialist urologist is well-versed in providing aesthetic penile treatments such as penis enlargement surgeries and penile implants. These aesthetic procedures can significantly enhance a man’s confidence and self-esteem and improve sexual function.

Circumcision: Circumcision is a commonly practised cultural, religious, and medical procedure in which the foreskin, a fold of skin that covers the head of the penis, is carefully removed. We provide circumcisions for newborns and for men who have various penile conditions that warrant the removal of their foreskin, such as penile cancer and phimosis.

Peyronie’s Disease: Another condition that can result in the curvature of the penis is Peyronie’s disease. Peyronie’s disease can occur at any age and can make it difficult for a man to undergo sexual activity.

It is important to seek medical attention if you suspect you might have symptoms of penile disorders, as these can cause discomfort, pain and difficulty with sexual intercourse. Early diagnosis and treatment can help to prevent complications, preserve sexual function, and improve your overall quality of life.
